Eyewitness Accounts Detail Attack by Suspected Thugs
On January 15, 2025, proceedings at the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Benin City were interrupted when gunshots were fired by suspected thugs. The incident occurred near the tribunal premises, triggering fear and forcing a temporary halt to the hearing.
Witness accounts describe a young man wearing a cap bearing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) logo stepping out of an unmarked white Toyota Hilux van. The individual reportedly fired multiple gunshots into the air while shouting, “Give us our mandate,” before quickly re-entering the vehicle and fleeing the area.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) and PDP have since engaged in a war of words over the incident. Jarrett Tenebe, APC’s Edo State Chairman, condemned the act of violence, accusing the PDP of orchestrating the attack to disrupt the legal process. On the other hand, PDP’s state chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, dismissed these allegations, claiming the APC staged the incident by using individuals disguised in PDP-branded apparel to discredit their party.
The tribunal was convened to hear petitions concerning the September 21, 2024, governorship election. The APC’s candidate, Monday Okpebholo, had been declared the winner, but the PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who came in second, is challenging the results, alleging electoral irregularities.
The gunfire incident has raised alarm over the security of the tribunal and the integrity of the ongoing proceedings. Many have called on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation and hold the culprits accountable to protect the credibility of the judicial process and ensure justice prevails.
