The 17-year-old looks back on his unforgettable debut, scoring a stunning goal and earning Player of the Match honors in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Girona.
Ethan Nwaneri reflected on his remarkable first Champions League start, where he earned a well-deserved man-of-the-match accolade. The 17-year-old delivered a standout performance in Girona, capped by an incredible goal that left the goalkeeper with no chance as it flew into the net, sealing a fourth consecutive win in the competition.
Looking back on the experience, Nwaneri shared how surreal it felt to be in the thick of a Champions League match after watching these games on television for years. Hearing the iconic theme music and standing in the lineup was a dream come true for the young talent.
“It’s definitely one of the highest points of my career so far,” Nwaneri said. “The Champions League is something I’ve always admired since I was a child. To step out there, start my first game, and win Man of the Match is incredibly special. I’m really happy with the outcome.”
He continued, “Hearing the music was unreal; it’s a moment I’ve dreamed about for so long. It was an unforgettable experience. Life moves fast, but I’m grateful to be here because this is where I’ve always wanted to be.”
Nwaneri’s goal not only earned him praise but also helped the team secure third place in the table, putting them in a strong position with six wins from eight matches. He expressed pride in the team’s performance and excitement about the knockout stages, with the possibility of facing teams like Juventus, AC Milan, Feyenoord, or PSV Eindhoven in March.
Reflecting on the match, he added, “The team played excellently. We fought hard until the very end, and I’m glad to have contributed with the goal. It was instinctive – I saw the space, and I could tell the goalkeeper wasn’t expecting the shot, so I took it and it went in.”
