Lassa Fever Outbreak Claims 14 Lives in Taraba

Taraba State is grappling with a deadly Lassa fever outbreak that has claimed 14 lives in three months, with six fatalities reported just last week. According to Daily Post, Dr. Kuni Joseph, Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, confirmed that since October 24, 2024, the state has recorded 84 suspected cases, with 33 testing positive for the virus. While nine patients have fully recovered and been discharged, six others are still receiving treatment at the FMC.

This marks Taraba State’s first major encounter with Lassa fever, sparking urgent collaboration among the FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization (WHO) to contain the outbreak and minimize its impact.

Understanding Lassa Fever: Causes, Risks, and Prevention

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic illness endemic to West Africa, including Nigeria. The virus is primarily spread through contact with food or household items contaminated by the urine or feces of infected rodents. Human-to-human transmission can also occur through exposure to bodily fluids such as blood, urine, or saliva from an infected individual. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, and general weakness, which can progress to severe complications such as internal bleeding and organ failure. The fatality rate among severe cases in hospitals is approximately 15%.

Preventive Measures and Public Awareness

Preventing the spread of Lassa fever requires stringent hygiene practices. Measures include keeping homes clean and rodent-free, storing food in sealed containers, and properly disposing of waste. Healthcare workers should use standard protective gear and adhere to infection control protocols when handling suspected or confirmed cases.

Raising public awareness is equally important. Community education campaigns are essential to inform people about the risks of Lassa fever, its transmission, and effective prevention strategies. With concerted efforts, health authorities aim to curb the outbreak and protect the health and safety of Taraba’s residents.
