Enugu State Battles Fresh Bird Flu Outbreak
The Enugu State Government has raised an alarm over a fresh outbreak of bird flu, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
Dr. Chidi Ezugwu, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, confirmed the development, emphasizing the importance of early detection and reporting. According to him, the outbreak poses a significant threat to poultry farmers and public health if not swiftly addressed.
“Residents, especially poultry farmers, are advised to immediately report any unusual bird deaths to veterinary authorities for prompt action. The government is taking proactive steps to contain the spread,” Dr. Ezugwu stated.
Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a contagious viral infection that affects birds and, in rare cases, can infect humans through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. Symptoms in humans can range from mild respiratory issues to severe complications.
The government is working closely with relevant agencies to monitor the situation and has urged farmers to adhere strictly to biosecurity measures. These include disinfecting farm equipment, restricting farm access, and properly disposing of dead birds.
Enugu State has also intensified public awareness campaigns to educate residents on the risks associated with the outbreak and ways to prevent infection. The government reassures the public that every effort is being made to manage the situation and protect the health of residents.
