One Officer Dead, Another Critically Injured in Attack
Five suspects identified as internet fraudsters, popularly called “Yahoo Boys,” ambushed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Friday, January 17, 2025. It was a team of officials from the Enugu zonal office who were going on with encircling the nabbing of suspects when the terrible attack occurred. The attack led to the death of one officer and a devastation injury in another.
The officer died at the scene; he was recently promoted to assistant superintendent after excelling in a qualification examination. The injured officer is presently receiving critical medical attention and remains in a critical condition.
According to the police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, a male suspect not yet identified has been taken in by law enforcement over the incident. The Anambra State Police Command has taken over the investigations, and police spokesperson Toluchukwu Ikenga confirmed that a firearm had been recovered from the scene: “The investigation is ongoing,” Ikenga stated, “and further details will be provided in due course.”

This attack increased fears amongst EFCC staff towards their safety and welfare, considering the risk involved in their job. It has stirred calls for more security, better insurance policies, and increased support to officers exposed to such risks while in the line of duty.
