Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Paraguayan left-back Diego León, making him their first acquisition of 2025.
Since taking charge at Old Trafford in November, manager Ruben Amorim has made it a priority to address the squad’s weaknesses. Following his debut match against Ipswich Town, Amorim identified the left wing-back position as a pressing concern. While Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are natural fits, recurring injuries have hampered their availability, with Shaw possibly transitioning to a centre-back role under Amorim’s tactical system.
Faced with Profit and Sustainability Rules, United’s recruitment team unearthed a South American gem in Diego León. After securing an agreement with his club, Cerro Porteño, in December, the young talent’s move to Manchester is now nearing completion.
On January 11, renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano provided an update on León’s move via Twitter:
“Paraguayan LB Diego León has arrived in Manchester for his medical and the official announcement as a new Manchester United player. The deal includes a $4 million base fee, $1 million in achievable add-ons, and over $3.5 million in performance-based bonuses, with payments going to his current club, Cerro Porteño..”
León’s transfer includes a $4 million base fee, $1 million in achievable performance add-ons, and an additional $3.5 million tied to more ambitious clauses.
While León is expected to finalize the move this week, he will remain with Cerro Porteño until July 2025 to continue his development before officially joining Manchester United’s squad.
Ruben Amorim’s proactive approach and focus on emerging talent signal a strategic rebuild at Old Trafford. As Diego León prepares to don the iconic red jersey, fans eagerly anticipate the impact the young Paraguayan could have on United’s future.
